A national campaign launched by Teaching Tolerance over a decade ago, Mix It Up Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. Students have identified the cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn.

On Tuesday November 24th, we asked students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with new people over lunch. It’s a simple act with profound implications. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from them, biases and misperceptions can fall away. Last year Mater Christi was recognized as Mix It Up Day Model School. Thanks to wonderful participation of our student body, not only sitting with someone new at lunch, but also mixing it up with Mass buddies.

This year, MCS students mixed up all day! Students were paired with Mass Buddies for the majority of the day. Together they completed activities that reflect our six core values; including going to mass, collaborative games in the gym, and learning about Global Responsibility by reading and discussing the Lorax, by Dr. Suess.
