MCS First Graders’ Poetry Published in the 2016 Creative Communication Anthology

June 8, 2016

These MCS first graders had their poetry accepted for publication in the 2016 Creative Communication Anthology (l. to r.): Lila Hershey, Colchester; Mariana Ferguson, South Burlington; Sophia Schultz, Colchester.

Every year, Mrs. Leslie Sem, first grade teacher at Mater Christi School, enters poetry that has been composed by her students into the Creative Communication’s Spring Poetry Contest.

Three of her first grader’s poems were selected to be published in the 2016 Creative Communication anthology, “A Celebration of Poets.” The three students are Lila Hershey, Mariana Ferguson and Sophia Schultz.

Mrs. Sem and her class traditionally celebrate National Poetry Month in April by learning to write acrostics, cinquains, haikus, and color poems.  They had kicked off their poetry unit in March by creating limericks, and then Mrs. Sem had entered each students limerick into the Creative Communications contest.

Mrs. Sem is very pleased that three of her first graders had their poetry published. She was also glad that she had kept everyone’s limericks on display since March so that she could refer to them when she made the announcement to her class.
