A Look at Latin at MCS

November 5, 2025

Latin is a window into the study of ancient language, thought, and traditions. It is the goal of Mater Christi’s Latin program to offer students a broad foundation in four key areas of this classical study: basic mastery of the Latin language, fundamental principles of grammar (in Latin and English), cultural knowledge, and linguistic connections between Latin and English. Grades K-3 are immersed from day one in Latin through nursery rhymes, prayers, songs, short conversations, picture discussions, games, and stories. Grade 1 and Grade 2 also explore mythology and the pantheon of Greek gods, while Grade 3 dives into an adaptation of the Roman epic, the Aeneid. Grade 4 and Grade 5 focus on reading and discussing Latin in short dialogues, with a greater emphasis on understanding grammar and translation. All students develop connections between Latin and English both naturally and through class discussions, learning to recognize the Latin roots of English words and to guess the meaning of new English words based on their Latin knowledge. The study of Latin also enhances students’ ability to be attentive readers and listeners, to cultivate pleasure in facing difficult tasks, and to appreciate the traditions and stories of those who walked before us (and continue to influence our world today).
