Over the past couple weeks, Mater Christi first grade students have been learning about astronomy during science class. We discussed the sun, stars, our shadows, Galileo, and the moon. To conclude our unit about the moon, we talked about the different phases of the moon and this lesson in particular had a tasty twist to it.
Students used Oreo cookies to make a crescent, quarter, new moon and full moon. The class had so much fun creating the different moon phases! They discussed why the moon appears to change shape and that the phases follow a repeating pattern. Students then were encouraged to go home and check out the moon to see if they could identify the phase.
