Mater Christi School held its local GEO competition on Tuesday, January 20 with teachers and students in grades 3-8 applauding the efforts of the ten contestants in the GEO Bee including:
- Ethan Treadwell, 8T
- Patrick Flaherty, 8T
- Ryan Brynes, 8W
- J.B. Bahrenberg, 7L
- Michael Walsh, 7M
- Tyler Rowley, 6T
- Bila Bogre, 6W
- Seamus Howrigan, 5B
- Patrick Walsh, 5M
- Silas Sandshaw, 4P
The first place winner was John “J.B.” Bahrenberg, seventh grade; second place went to Michael Walsh, seventh grade. Both students will next take a written test to qualify them to enter the state level bee which is scheduled for March 27, 2015 at Middlebury College. If both students qualify for the state competition, but J.B. is not able to be present, Michael will take his place. Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee, using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage schools to include geography in their curriculum, spark student interest in the subject, and raise public awareness about geography.
