Teacher Talk: Middle School Students Solve a Crime Like Sherlock Holmes

October 16, 2014

As part of a literature unit on detective mystery fiction, the 6th and 7th grade students used the logic and deduction skills they learned about while reading Sherlock Holmes and other great fictional detectives to solve a murder. The crime scene was set up in the classroom and the students had to follow a chain of evidence to logically deduce the facts about the crime and come to a conclusion on who committed it, or rather, “whodunnit”?

It was a memorable approach to a fun and engaging lesson. As Holmes would say, every crime is a logic puzzle that can be solved with solid deduction!
