First Grade Writers

May 15, 2026

1B recently shared their narrative writing at a class author celebration! This gathering was a way for students to celebrate their growth, create connections from school to families, and to practice presenting their work in front of others. In first grade, students learn and practice all steps of the writing process- brainstorming, story mapping, drafting, editing, and publishing. This is a big step from kindergarten writing, and students work on the same writing piece for several weeks to build their stamina.

Over the course of the year, students in 1B have been practicing using the writing process to create various writing pieces in the styles of informative, opinion, and narrative writing. Many of the writing pieces we create tie to books that we have read together as a class.

This writing project was special as students were able to select any topic from their own lives that they wanted to write about. This naturally made the project more challenging, as each student was writing about something different. Over two weeks, first graders worked through each step of the writing process to produce a four to five page narrative story. Topics ranged from family pets, ski trips, sleepovers, and sports games. First graders were thrilled to share their writing with their families, and to show off their hard work!
