The last day of the school year for MCS students was June 11, and the school held a special celebration for the occasion. The entire student body and many visitors gathered in the gym for Mass which honored the students who had received their First Holy Communions during the year. MCS students come from 26 towns/parishes in northern VT, so it seemed fitting to hold a Mass where all of the students could celebrate having received First Communion with their peers whom they see every school day. Fr David Theroux, SSE was the celebrant.
The children’s teachers, Ms. Miranda McClellan and Ms. Betsy Martin, spent several weeks preparing their second graders for the Mass which also involved the recitation of Catherine McAuley’s Suscipe, the “Hail Mary” in French and the song “Awesome God “ with everyone present using sign language as they sang.
The First Communicants came dressed in the clothes which they had worn for their First Communions in their parishes, white dresses and veils for the girls, suits and ties for the boys. The Mass was followed by a reception in the classrooms for all of the second graders and any families who had attended the ceremony.
