Kindergarten Mother’s Day Luncheon

May 12, 2015

Mother's Day LuncheonEach year, the MCS Kindergarten students hold a special luncheon to honor their moms. In Ms. King’s homeroom, students acted out “The Umbrella”, a story by Jan Brett, as it is about the rainforest and students are in the midst of a unit on the rainforest now. Afterwards, students serenaded the crowed with “You Are My Sunshine” and Marlo Thomas’ song, “Parents are People” which explains “mommies are people, people with children, when mommies were little, they used to be girls…”

In Mrs. Roger’s homeroom, students began their special presentation with the lights out, holding flickering LED candles, and by singing “This Little Light of Mine.”  Next, they performed two short plays based on “Henny Penny,” an English fairy tale, and “Little Red Hen”, an old 1940’s folk tale by Margot Zemach. They concluded by singing songs about the environment and their special song about recycling. Once they were done performing, the class took their moms up to the Makerspace where each of the moms had a special paper flower basket, a special card and light boxes that they had made in the Makerspace.  When the moms looked into the boxes without light, they couldn’t see anything.  However, once they held flashlights to a small hole in the box, they could see shiny foil and special artwork inside.

When the performances were completed, students brought their moms into the gym for a special lunch and a sugar cookie that they decorated on Thursday with Ms. Sue in the cafeteria. Everything from the performances to the lunch presentation was beautiful. Happy Mother’s Day!
