Sister Joanne Lafreniere Spirit of Mercy Award 2025

July 15, 2025

As we reflect on another meaningful year at Mater Christi School, we are reminded of the powerful ways in which our students continue to grow in faith, character, and compassion. The end of the school year is always a time of both celebration and reflection—an opportunity to recognize the students who truly exemplify our school’s mission and values.

One such student is rising 8th grader Finch Heilenbach, the recipient of the Sister Joanne LaFreniere Spirit of Mercy Award for the 2024–2025 academic year.

Sister Joanne LaFreniere, RSM, devoted an extraordinary 61 years to Catholic education in Vermont, with 54 of those years spent shaping the hearts and minds of students at Mater Christi School. Her legacy of faith, service, and unwavering compassion endures through this annual award, presented to a rising 8th grader who embodies the values of the Sisters of Mercy and the spirit of Mater Christi School.

Finch was selected through a thoughtful process involving our middle school faculty and administration. Throughout his time at MCS, Finch has demonstrated exceptional kindness, empathy, and a sincere commitment to building up his peers. His actions reflect humility, integrity, and a heart compelled by mercy, values at the core of both Sister Joanne’s legacy and our school community.

In recognition of his exemplary character, Finch will receive a $500 scholarship, and his name will be engraved on the Sister Joanne LaFreniere Spirit of Mercy Award plaque displayed in the middle school lobby, a lasting reminder of the impact one student can have on an entire community.

Congratulations, Finch! Your light shines brightly at MCS, and we are so proud of you.
