Teacher Talk: Peace One Day 2015

September 21, 2015

Peace Day 2015In 1982, the United Nations declared the first official Peace Day, and it was recognized annually on the third Tuesday of September. In 2001, the U.N. assembly declared September 21 as a sanctioned day of peace and non-violence. The goal of Peace Day is to strengthen the ideals of peace all around the world.

Mater Christi middle school students have read scripture passages about peace from Isaiah to Philippians. We are using our Mercy Core Values of Global Vision and Responsibility to guide the creation of our Peace One Day projects. 6th through 8th grade students have created web pages, banners, flags, posters, yard signs, and created a presentation to Mayor Weinberger to establish Peace Day for the City of Burlington. On September 19, 2015, students created a beautiful chalk art display in Burlington’s City Hall Park where hundreds of people passed, admired and photographed.

On Monday, September 21, the middle school gathered to create a human peace sign to show their faith that peace is possible.
