Discovering personal greatness in pre-school through grade 8 students - Burlington, Vermont

Tim Loescher

I grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts as the youngest of four children.  My home was one filled with faith, work, service and adventure.  During my first teaching assignment, I made a best friend and then married her.  Christa and I have four children, Peter, Elise, Teddy and John, all of whom are former or present MCS students and each of whom were born in different states and one in a different country.  But despite our moving around, we have sought to fill our home and lives with the same consistent sort of faith, work, life and joy.

My professional life has been almost entirely connected to schools.  After my undergraduate days, I taught science for 3 years at Worcester Academy in Massachusetts before attending graduate school at Dartmouth College.  Our lives and career then took a significant turn.  For 12 years Christa and I both worked in the world of college ministry on the campuses of Penn State, UVM, and among the major universities of northern Germany.  But the joy of working in the classroom never left me, and upon return from Germany I found myself teaching again, this time at our own children’s school, Mater Christi.  During my teaching tenure at MCS, I also completed UVM’s Vermont Mathematics Initiative, Master of Science in Teaching degree, a program in which I have also had the opportunity to return and instruct.

I have served MCS as a middle school math teacher, as the Assistant Head of School, and now as President and Head of School.  My work has always been centered on learning, helping others to learn, and supporting those who lead others.  I am honored now at Mater Christi to oversee the task of advancing the mission and values of the Sisters of Mercy, and privileged to empower our teachers to be the most creative and effective professionals they can be for the sake of our precious students.
